Melatonin Gummies?

Question

My sister and law gives her 3 year old a melatonin gummy (childerns) everymight before bed to help him sleep.
And I was kind of shocked. 
But then it got my wondering, does anyone else use those? And why?

Its a completely different situation here 🇬🇧 as melatonin is only prescribed by specialist not even your normal GP (family doctor). So I've never met anyone who uses it and Im a paediatric nurse. My understand is Melatonin is the hormone that helps you fall alseep but not stay alseep so yes I can see some use in it but its definitely not something I would consider using.

We gave to our eldest after trying everything, he is autistic and had a lot of trouble falling and staying asleep so under the guidance of our doctor and interventionist we used the drops and eventually weaned him off to avoid dependency. I wouldn’t use it in place of good sleep practices/routines and not long term either, there is just not enough studies done on long term side effects, especially in children.

I’d be shocked too. Every night seems like a lot I could see every once in a while. I haven’t yet but I’d do it if she was having a rough night or if we were staying somewhere different.

I have melatonin drops that I use on myself and my toddlers occasionally; when they’re having a rough time settling. The recommended dosage is 10 drops and I do 1-2, usually one. I use about 4 on myself. 
I do not do it every night.
