Speech Question
I don’t even really know what I’m looking for by posting this, I guess to just see if anyone has had a similar experience.
My son just turned 3. He has a big vocabulary and knows many words. He creates independent sentences, tells us what he wants and what he doesn’t want, loves to sing songs and follows directions easily. My only concerns are that he still often refers to himself as “you” and “your” when speaking. He doesn’t ever refer to me as “I”. For example, if I said “I don’t want that” he will say “mommy doesn’t want that.” But he will still say “you want apple sauce” instead of “I want apple sauce.” We had a baby 6 months ago, and I realize that we have never corrected this behavior from him. We’ve always just let him say it. For the last month we have been correcting him, and he refers to himself as “I” or says “my” about 40% of the time now, so it is improving.
Also, if we ask him a question that he can’t remember or doesn’t know the answer to, he will repeat it. For example, “where did we go play yesterday” he will say, “where did we go play yesterday?” But if I ask him, “where did we play yesterday, the pool or the playground” he will say “the playground” and answer it correctly.
At his 3 year appt, his doctor said she thinks his language skills could possibly be slightly delayed because we are home a lot and were home aloooooot during the pandemic and then birth of our second child. She thinks it will correct itself over time, and as we have worked with him, it seems like it is improving.
Is anyones else’s child doing anything similar? Am I alone? Google is such a scary place and I think I have a case of PPD that is making me incredibly anxious. Parenting is so hard!!
