Phone for an 8 year old?

My daughter turns 8 this summer. She already uses an ipad ( set up for kids and constantly monitored) and would love a phone. An iphone would be the same thing as an ipad - but just the idea of giving her a phone so early… 🤷🏻‍♀️
What do we modern mom think about this ?
Of course she wouldn’t take it to school and maybe won’t have a sim card in it just wifi - like the ipad

My oldest son is 9, he doesnt have a phone nor do I plan to get him one anytime soon. Kids can obtain sim cards elsewhere. I feel like kids are too hooked on screens way too young in general. I dont see how saying yes to this is beneficial.

I had this same conversation with my mother at that age. I didn’t get a phone till I was 15 and a freshman in high school. I don’t see the point in having a phone in elementary or middle school grade level. Honestly a lot of kids now are constantly on their phones and don’t do anything else.

Doesn’t seem like he needs it. He can also FaceTime you if you have an iPhone from the iPad so he can reach you.

What is the reason for giving her the phone if no SIM card? It is literally just the same as an iPad then, no? My son is still a baby but I think by that age, I’d be open to giving him an inexpensive  phone so that he could reach us on his own from a friend or family member’s house. Full parental controls of course.

I can't say I wouldn't ever give one to my 8 year old, but I would avoid it as long as possible.
If anything, she could get one that can only do calls basically. No smartphone at that age for sure.

My son has had his own cell phone with a Sim card since he was 5. I work and I want him to feel as if he can contact me at anytime without asking an adult to do it. Never know what could happen. I think you shot get your child a phone with a Sim card.

Where is she going without you that she needs a phone? If she csnt take it to school, which is probably the only place shes on where shes away from family for hours on end, theres really no point. Just my opinion but I plan on giving my daughter a phone when shes doing activities on her own, like hanging out with friends without me having to go with her or going to practices by herself.

I had one at that age and brang it to school with me simply because I was responsible for going to and from school with my little brother quite often and left home alone with him
