Can your 4 year old read. ?? If so what words.?

My 4yo boy recognizes each letter and can read (sometimes kinda guessing😅) relatively medium-short words like “mom”, “food”, “water”, “animal” but also his name and ours’ 😁

No. We homeschool and I start teaching letters and phonograms once they turn 5. No sight words. My about to be 6 is reading at a 2nd grade level. I only teach cursive and don't plan to teach print letters until age 7.

It is most important for them to know all the letters and sounds. Most kids that struggle with reading memorize words and can't actually sounds anything out. I'm a teacher. If they know the letters and sounds by Kindergarten, I would say they are ahead of the game.

My daughter did but she was in a pretty good preschool program at 3 so was able to test into regular kindergarten at 4. She’d been doing JumpStart at home since she was almost 2.  So I think some kids can read. I think that JumpStart program helped her as well as her usual bedtime story. That program was totally self paced so it allows them to go at their own speed. Once they reach all the goals they move onto the the next.

No. Mine actually starts Prek this year and although her older sister 5YO is just starting to read some words, since she never went to Prek — kindergarten has helped a lot. We read a book every night to help too.

I kept my 4 year old home from preschool in Fall 2020 because of covid and we spent the school year doing workbooks and learning to read using BOB Books (what I learned to read 30 years ago!)
He entered Kindergarten reading at a third grade level. He’s turning 6 in June and currently try reading the Captain Underpants series on his own. 
I highly recommend BOB Books to teach foundational reading skills!

Has your kid started kindergarten? My lo knew the letters and sounds when he went into K and he started learning sight words and reading in K.
