What made you want to get married?

Question

What were your thoughts. Your idea, his, both? 
Explain. 
Why is marriage important too you? Or why is it not? 
If you decided not to get married, why not? 
Just curious.

I never wanted to get married, but now I'm actually thinking about it.

A lot of people look at marriage as a piece of paper. I got married at 22 and my husband is the best thing that happened to me, besides my baby on the way. We got married through church as well. There are honestly no words that will accurately described how wonderful my marriage is. It's like a support system, a security, a love that i can't explain. In order to have a great household (in my opinion) you need a great base. Without a base you're building won't be stable. I really don't understand why marriage has become an option these days.

I was the same way. Marriage and children were never on my agenda. But, sometimes love changes your priorities and your wants. My now husband and I had not even discussed marriage and he popped the question one day out of the blue. I said yes and I never looked back, and I never regretted saying yes. He didn't change me, nor did he try to, my wants changed naturally because I love him. Still married 6 years later, one child and one on the way.

We wanted a big party and to show everyone formally that we are committed to each other (as if the mortgage and 7 year relationship wasn't enough). In hindsight it was a bit of a waste of money and unfortunate circumstances (a miscarriage the day before the wedding) have tainted it all for me, but I had never loved him more than on that day. I don't think it's necessary at all to get married, it hasn't changed our relationship one bit. It will be nice for us all to have the same surname when the baby is born though. We plan to renew our vows in our own garden when our baby arrives to try and achieve the wedding feeling we should have experienced the first time around. I'm not saying I didn't enjoy bits of our day, it was just horrendous timing!

The fact that I wanted to make a vow to God and to my husband. I don't see a piece of paper. I have those vows forever engraved in my brain, heart and soul. We were together when I was 16. Had a baby at 16. He proposed to me when I was 17. At 18 we had another baby. At 19 we got married. At 20 we had another baby. Now at 26/27 we will be having our 4th child. We also lost a baby before we conceived our 2nd. (I was top of my class, graduated honors, full scholarship, 3 degrees under my belt and 2 on the way, I'm a teacher) and NONE of that would have been possible without God and him. He's my rock, my support, my BFF. Why wouldn't I marry him?!

Being married was always important to us. We see it as the ultimate commitment  to one another. We wanted to be united under God. So many people say it's "just a piece of paper" but to us its a vow under God and a union blessed by him. We're a family in the purest sense and we would never have it any other way.

Marriage is the number one cause for divorce. My parents were married 24years new each other for 28... Well they got divorced. My thoughts are you don't have to be married it's a piece of paper that holds you together, when the love of,two people should be enough. Marriage is overrated. Weddings are over priced and it's a bunch of bull, I'm perfectly happy with my boyfriend. If he got me a ring I would ware it but that's pretty much as far as I'm going.

I always dreamt about getting married. My parents have been married for 38years now and I love that it symbolises the coming together of two families.

My husband and I first met when I was 14.  I wasn't ready for a boyfriend then and so after a short argument I had blocked him on MSN... 5 years later he was persistant about wanting to go see a movie with me.. I was getting tired of saying no so I finally gave in. 15 days after we started to date he proposed. "I lost you once 5 years ago; I'm not willing to lose you again" he said. I said yes. and we got married 1   1/2years later. He always reminds me that he never cared about getting married and he wouldn't habe done it with anyone else.

But when you're talking to someone and you say "my husband" you have this sense of pride about being able to show yourself and to the world that you've commited to something big, and you're in it for the long haul.

I've always been a bit traditional, so I was all about getting married... just never pictured my inevitable adult life any other way for myself. That said, we lived together almost 4 years before tying the knot. I highly recommend that, as there are no/very few surprises when you live together first -- at least a year or two before getting engaged. We were both ready for marriage, and yet my husband managed to fully surprise me with a lovely, well-planned proposal (in private as I wouldn't have liked a huge audience). It's funny though I think I came around much later than he did -- he in fact told me that he loved me and was pretty sure he would marry me someday when he asked me to be his girlfriend. Ha. I didn't take him seriously at the time. Sometimes you just know I guess!

Anyway, I will say that despite cohabitation pre wedding and nothing material changing in a physical sense afterward, there is a palpable, wonderful difference I noticed once being married. It's hard to explain, but I love the commitment, being husband and wife and its overall just awesome. We are best friends, equal partners and now soon to be parents. For us it just is feels right! That said, our lives/experiences are our own - I wouldn't judge anyone making a different choice. Do what your heart tells you ❤️

We had both talked about it. It was important to us to be married prior to starting a family. We have a more traditional marriage where hubby works and I stay home, we can afford for me not work and feel like some things (like me staying home while kids are young, eating meals at the table, etc) are important values.

My OH doesn't believe in marriage, we are together nearly 6 years, friends for a year before that. Have a 3 year old and  I am 30 weeks tomorrow. 
He believes that us being together and having our family means more then a marriage ever could. It doesn't change how we feel about each other and he believes there are better things to spend the money on then a wedding. I.e building our forever home and family holidays.

I would love to get married at some
Point but it is purely superficial. I never went to my Debs, so just to get all dolled up in a lovely dress for everyone and feel magical.
