How to explain a period to a 3.5-year-old?

My 3.5-year-old has been asking questions when I'm having a period and she sees blood on the pad. How do you explain this to someone her age?

I told my kids (3 y/o girl, 5 y/o boy) that I my body gets ready to have a baby every month and if there’s no baby, that’s when I bleed. They also know that I take “no more babies” pills every night so there are no questions about why there is no baby every month. At this point mommy needing to use a pad or tampon once in a while is just normal.

My nephew walked in on me once when I was pulling out my menstrual cup and asked if I was going to drink it like a vampire 😂
I explained to him (with my sister’s permission!) that some people have bodies that can make a baby, and their body gets its insides all nice and cozy like a waterbed in case a baby wants to grow there, but if there’s no baby, then the warm cozy stuff comes out and I use the cup to catch it so it doesn’t make my clothes messy. He was satisfied that I am not the undead drinking my own blood in the bathroom.

My daughter is 3 & I told her it’s a period which I get every month & one day she probably will too & I explained to her exactly what it is & now if she sees me changing a tampon she just says oh you got your period & that’s that 🤷🏽‍♀️ I believe in always teaching her the truth about our bodies

I told my 3 year old that once you hit puberty you get a period every month where you bleed from your vagina. She now walks around the house with my tampons saying "these are tampons for your period and you put the in your butt!" 😂 and then she asks to have a period too and I'm like no ya don't lol. But in due time. I didn't want to make it overly complicated. She seemed fine with that answer

My daughter is 2.5, she says "is your vagina bleeding?" And I just say "yes, it bleeds sometimes but it doesn't hurt", I show her my cup or pads and explain it collects the blood so it doesn't get on my underwear... and that's about as far as the conversation gets before she's off doing something else 🤷‍♀️

“I have a uterus and once a month it bleeds. It fills with blood in case there’s a baby in there. But when there is no baby the blood has to leave. It’s normal.”

I avoid my little ones that age seeing me wipe or my pads when I’m on my period. Once I feel they re at an age of understanding, I will tell them the reason we get periods. 3 year olds can’t truly comprehend. But if you insist on educating your small toddler, you can say you have a boo boo that’s going to get better, or tell em why women get periods if you want. Ultimately you’re the parent, and you decide when and how you educate your kids in these subjects.
