Acrylic Nails v. Gel Nails

I have never gotten my nails done professionally (working on cars makes it kind of hard lol). I have used the box kits from places like WalMart and Walgreens but that is it. I decided to go with my mom and get our nails done for Christmas. I know that I want a French manicure with maybe some silver or good sparkle around the white tip?

Anyway, what would you ladies suggest getting? Acrylic or gel? I have heard good and nad about both but I think I am leaning more towards gel. I think they will be better for my nails (don't damage as much) and will probably be easier to work with since I type a lot for my job.

Opinions? Good/bad experiences?
