Why do wars last so long?

Question

I don’t fully understand how two countries can be “fighting” so long. In places where peoples homes are, businesses, parks, schools…like what makes one side “win” to end the war? 
I never found history interesting so I never tried to understand but I’ve been pondering this with Ukraine and Russia and want to learn.
Any history lovers here that can help me understand?

Historically, wars were won when one side suffered so many casualties that they had to surrender because they were simply out of soldiers.  
These days it’s much more political and is dependent on leaders making compromises and agreements. If they can’t come to agreements then the war simply continues indefinitely.

I don’t mean to downplay the horror. Even a minute in a war zone must be Hell. 
However, if we look at it in a long range historical context the 100 days of the Russian invasion is not particularly long at all. It’s common for wars to last for years and years. 
To answer your direct question, many people have evacuated, and are now living as refugees abroad. Others stay though, and yes they live something approximating daily life amid bombings, gunfire, and other horrors of war. Christiane Amanpour did an interview with a Ukrainian MP still working in Kyiv recently that’s worth watching. They archive it all online. There’s a ton of documentation about life in London during the Blitz in WWII as just one example of many if you’re wanting to learn more about past conflicts, or look up the history of siege warfare if you’d prefer not to sleep again this decade. 
As for when it will end, there’s a few possibilities. The best of which is a diplomatic agreement. The issue here is that Russia doesn’t want to leave without annexing Ukrainian territory, and the Ukrainians (understandably) don’t want to cede any land. It’s a decision for the Ukrainians to make, and they all seem pretty united in keeping their homeland in tact. The other possibilities are one side losing enough troops, having a shift of leadership, or the supply chain breaking down enough they concede defeat. There’s a slimmer possibility of other nations joining in, but I don’t see that happening without WWIII. Finally there’s the nuclear option. It’s unlikely for multiple reasons, although it’s worth noting that the Russians do have that ability.

That is a million dollar question … it could have ended if Ukraine surrendered on day one but they have chosen to fight for their freedom. 🥺

To be honest, that is 100 days today, exactly if we don't count that there were conflicts at east area since 2014.
But time that is what is needed. Wars would last less, if one part could overpower another one without an effort. Ww2 ended with a bang and with devastating results. If we assume, that we don't want to use unclear weapons, then you need to overpower differently. But as oponents both stand strong, it takes time. 🤷‍♀️
