First Ultrasound at 20 weeks?

I just learned I won't be getting my first ultrasound until 20 weeks 😭 Saw my first babe at 8 weeks and so this is hard to take as I'm now 8 weeks with my 2nd. I know it sounds super privileged that I'm upset over this (prob just my wild hormones), but 20 weeks?! 💔 Anyone else having to wait this long and struggling with it?

What?! 20 week is crazy, isn’t that too far along to do a proper dating ultrasound? Usually there is a ultrasound at 8 weeks to date the baby and then one at 20 weeks to make sure everything is developing normally. I would be really upset, maybe you need to find a new doctor.

I can’t imagine having a first one at 20 weeks. I can’t wait that long. I’m paying out of pocket to have 3 done in the first trimester only. I used to wait 10 weeks just to discover I had a missed miscarriage. It was devastating. I wish I knew much earlier. Now my anxiety level is high, especially becoz I don’t have a lot of pregnancy symptoms. Absolutely no morning sickness. So I really need to see the heartbeat and make sure it’s still there. It’s worth it for me.

That does seem pretty late. In the UK we get a 12 week scan which you can get tests done then for things like down syndrome/ edwards syndrome etc which they just measure the fluid behind the babies neck. Also for dating and then your 20 week one to make sure everything else is fine. Although this pregnancy I’ve had one at 5/6 weeks and I’ve got one again at 9 weeks , which I’ll get another one at 12 weeks for the testing. I would see if you can get a different doctor who does more than one for you x

This is normal! I know it’s hard to wait but it really is for the best.. there are risks to ultrasounds and you don’t want to have more than you need.
