Did I overreact - 6 year old accidentally hurt 1 year old

Question

We have a heavy dog gate that divides the front of the house from the back. 1 year old can't move it and I've told 6 year old at least 50 times since we've had it not to touch it.
I go pee. I hear a loud boom and crying. 6 year old took the gate and pushed it to the hallway and then straightened it completely. Usually it is like a zig zag so it can't tip in the entryway we have it in.
Our 1 year old fell face first with the gate and scraped her feet up pretty badly.
I know it was an accident but I got so upset I yelled at 6 year old for moving around the gate as I've told her many times it's not a toy. As I cleaned up 1 year olds feet I told oldest this is what happens when you move it when I'm not around, don't touch it again. I said this in a stern, raised voice.
She got upset with me and left the room.
Now I'm feeling upset and guilty that I overreacted.

You have a safety rule and she broke it and the baby got hurt. It’s ok to react to that. Just check in later and make sure she understands why you were upset and why it’s important that she not mess with the gate, give her a hug and reassure her that everything is ok.

If you’ve told her 50 times before and she’s 6, she deserved to be yelled at one time in a moment of reaction 
Of course yelling at kids all the time isn’t the right thing to do, but once in awhile if you raise your voice because they haven’t listened the other 50 times, it’s not an overreaction. 
I personally would have had consequences and she would have been sent to her room 
She needs to learn that this is serious because the baby could be seriously injured

Definitely didn’t overreact. She needs to listen especially when it’s a safety concern you told her multiple times and she choose to not listen and caused the baby to get hurt . I would of yelled and put her in time out.

Girl from the title I thought you spanked the girl. You are a parent, you have to raise your voice. People aren't supposed to never feel bad about the things they do. Even when it's an accident. That's how you keep them from doing it again. It is you job as a parent to make sure your children fully understand that actions have consequences.

Nope don’t feel guilty one bit. She needs to learn what she was doing is not safe and not ok. You did the right thing telling her in a stern voice. Maybe now she sees why you have this rule. I’m sure she realized she messed up and she made you upset, and that’s why she ran off. Parenting is rough but things like this need to happen sometimes to be able to help them learn. You did the right thing mama!

She’s 6, she’s been told repeatedly, and she chose to ignore you. As a result, her sibling got hurt. Yelling is a pretty normal response in a situation where your toddler has been injured.

Remember a child’s reasoning brain is NOT fully developed! A 6 year old isn’t an adult and will not function like one. But I’ve been there, over react and then feel guilt for ever. I try hard to be extremely consistent with the kids temperament wise. Then they won’t develop a fear of me. I have rules and and stubbornly always the same with them but also kind, loving and gentle. We are their teachers! We have to show them how to respond in tough situations. Not on a soap box, I struggle every day, it’s real, but so are my goals.

It’s impossible to never raise your voice, little kids test their parents all the time. If you see your child reaching for a hot pan or a campfire are you going to gently tell them “no that’s hot” or are you going to have a firm voice and make sure you get their attention and then explain to them why their actions were wrong once they’re not in danger of hurting themself or others? Safety isn’t something to play with and you did the right thing. Now you can go have a calm conversation again about what happened and why you say messing with the gate isn’t okay.
