Yes. It took me three years to get on Social Security Disability Insurance. After the third appeal, we hired a lawyer who sent me to get specific evaluations done and other things and then we got a court date. He asked my job coach to come as well. He even told my mom that she should cry in front of the judge! During the hearing, the judge indicated  that she was awarding me the money in one of her questions. My lawyer said that usually it takes weeks before he hears the decision and this was the first time a judge had ever said that during the hearing.
Anyway, the application process can be long. It can take years to be awarded Social Security benefits when you are younger than 65. It is need based, but they can deny you. In my opinion, they want to weed out the less serious applicants so they can save on paying out more money. But then when you get it, you can only work up to a certain amount of hours per week and make a maximum of a certain amount of dollars a month. If you make more than that, then you can lose your benefits.
This happened to a friend. He works in a shipping store and it gets really busy in December. He had to cover other people's shifts. I guess the IRS got wind of how much he made that month and he lost his Social Security. For the next several months he had to get a lawyer and go to court or whatever and prove that it was only a temporary situation and that he normally doesn't work full time or make as much as he did that month. It was a mess for his whole family and he had to put his wedding plans on hold until he could get it back. Thankfully, he did.
