For those of you who have kids who play an instrument (piano, etc.), what age did you start lessons?

What age would you recommend starting lessons given your experience?

Ok so I’m a music lesson instructor and I have my doctorate in music. I started piano at age 8 and cello at age 10. 
Please do not start your kid sooner than 4. They’re a pain to teach. There are group general music classes for babies and toddlers that are great and it’ll help prepare them for private lessons in the future. 
I’d say 5-6 is a good age to start piano lessons and any other instrument when they’re around 4th grade.

My children play piano. My oldest started at about 4 1/2 and my youngest at age 5. They’re now 12 and 10.

Another thing to consider is the size of the child and the size of the instrument. Some instruments can be started relatively early such as piano and strings. Many woodwinds and brass require the child to grow a little more before they’re going to have success or be able to easily carry the instrument.

Most kids start music lessons for band and orchestral instruments around 10 years old. I learned the clarinet late at 13. It's not unheard of for kids to start earlier if they show an interest or their parents play one. I'm planning on introducing an instrument when my kid is mature enough to take care of and respect my instruments. My husband plays the trumpet, so that'll be an option as well.
