Nursing home almost killed my grandmother
So a few years ago my grandmother was rendered unable to live by herself due to her declining health. She moved in with us but we had to work. I thought it would be okay as I got multiple breaks during the day because my boss knew about the situation. She was falling way too much and she was on blood thinners, the last time she fell she busted her head open and it was very serious bc of the blood thinners. I put in my two weeks and my mom put her in a nursing home.
This way she had 24/7 care and also me and my cousin coming to see her multiple times a day to check on her until I could stay with her 24/7. We were also putting up railing for her and getting the house ready.
Keep in mind, right before, we had found out she had stage four liver cancer.
One day my cousin calls me and tells me “Gma is throwing up blood, and I told them and they haven’t done anything about it and I don’t know what to do.”
So I immediately head there and sure enough every few moments she was puking up straight pure blood.
I call the nurse in and tell her as well, and she says “okay.” And I was like… okay.. well what are you guys going to do like what’s the protocol?
“I’ve already called the doctor and left a message it’s okay.”
“Ma’am… vomiting blood is not ‘okay’, her doctor needs to know and needs to know now.”
“I have it handled.”
“Okay well I’m going to get in contact with my aunt and have her call her doctor because this is terrifying.”
“With all due respect shes my patient and I decide what’s going to happen next.”
I just looked at her… and said “with all due respect, she is my grandmother and she’s puking blood so I’m calling her doctor. I am not going to sit here and watch her vomit blood over and over again and just wait to see what happens. This made her MAD! She stormed out of the room. (She had been puking for a while, I’m not sure how long)
The doctor sent an ambulance to pick her up and be immediately transferred to him.
The nurse was being extremely hateful, the EMS workers literally said to her “lady, WHAT is your problem?” Because she was in the room slamming crap around and being majorly in the way of the EMS workers she told the EMS workers “she is MY patient and the family decided to go over my head and declare they know what’s best for her.”
They looked at her crazy and said “she is VOMITING BLOOD! This is valid and you need to move! CAN YOU MOVE?” And I’m not kidding you as they rolled my grandmother out of the room she threw her hands up in the air and said this was BS. She was talking about how family members think they’re special and can make all the calls. She was just going OFF! Seriously the most hateful woman I have ever met. Lady it’s not personal I’m just scared for my grandmother.
It turns out she was bleeding internally and somehow bleeding into her stomach and her doctor told us that if we had waited any longer she would have died. She required immediate surgery to stop the bleeding. We pulled her out of the nursing home. I quit my job and stayed home with her until she passed away.
My mom, cousin, and even my gmas doctor reported this nurse and this entire thing and she actually got fired over it. I don’t know what’s protocol and what’s not, I dont know what I was supposed to do but I do not regret contacting my family and the doctor. I knew I wasn’t crazy when the EMS workers bit into her for being so hateful and unhelpful.
I will never forget this for the rest of my freaking life though. I hope to god I’m never in a nursing home.
