Does your hospital confine you to just the room while in labour?

The more that I think about my first birth, the more I wish I listened to my mom.

My mom's had 3 natural unmedicated births, when I was in the third trimester with my first she kept advising me to stay active, when in labour stay home for as long as you feel you can and even then, stay active.

When she was in labour with her last a couple of years ago, I remember her actually being in the garden planting roses, went for a shower, tried to have a nap and some food etc. I held my breath everytime I saw her have a contraction. Then she knew when it was time to go and off she went, gave birth within 2 hours of being in the hospital, she said it was the same for all 3 of us.

Anyway when i was in labour with my first, the second I noticed my contractions were regular, I called her, she told me to keep busy but I panicked and went to the hospital, immediately I was strapped down on monitors, no real reason, I was low risk. They gave me a birthing ball but that's all the activity I could do.

When she came to visit me in labour, she argued with one of the nurses to atleast let me walk around the hospital, they gave up and said I have 30 minutes, I was only 3cm then after 12 hours, after that walk around I jumped to 5cm, I thought great, speeding up now, but I was strapped down again and didn't progress any further.

I was there for a total of 36 hours till they wheeled me in for an emergency c section because baby was stressed and loosing oxygen, I didn't sleep or eat in those 36 hours, contractions were back to back and were so intense that I cried for an epidural and gas and air.

With my second I was scared of that so I opted for a planned c section.

I wish I listened to my mom when she said "I'd rather labour at home, doing the things I love and risk giving birth on the living room floor than be confined to a hospital room with stress".

Does your hospital confine you? What was your experience?
