Would you go hiking alone?

Question

I want to go hiking but I know there's risks but I don't really have many friends and the ones I do have their schedules are busy. We're adults so it makes sense.

Pick a popular trail. One that isn’t too long maybe and has good signage and clear paths. Look at reviews of the hike etc. it’s a good place to start to building towards hiking alone

I've been hiking alone for years. Just bring some sort of protection. For me I always carried a pistol, but you can always bring a knife or pepper spray. I've never had any issues.

It really depends on where you live, the trails you’ll be on, and what type of experience you have. We’re in Maine so most hikes are about 3hrs up and 2 1/2 down. There are many well known trails that always have foot traffic so it would more like a hike with strangers than being alone. Some even have stroller paths. Other places are more secluded. Depending on where you are bring bells if you have a chance of running into bears or other wildlife, pepper spray, etc. I have no issue hiking alone, but I have my own pack and know everything I could possibly need to bring with me. If you have never been hiking I would not recommend going alone. I remember being on the trail a few years ago running into a guy who stopped on a whim to hike this trail. He had no gear, no water, and no headlamp as the sun was setting. He also took a very steep path up and had to go back the same way to get to his car. It is fun trying new things but when it comes to hiking you need to have a plan. Being alone on a mountain in the dark trying to find your way back to your car would probably be your first and last hiking trip lol

Anyone who goes for a hike alone is crazy imo. Depending on where you live there could def be wildlife that’s dangerous. There are also dangerous people out there. If you want to have nightmares look into how many people have gone missing in the national parks in the us… It’s bizarre actually.
