Adderall XR & Pregnancy

Ka

Katie
I have been taking Adderall XR 20mg as prescribed by my doctor for about a year now. I continued use up until my 7th week of pregnancy. My OB advised that I discontinue use, but it was only a recommendation as there is no proof as to what it will do to the unborn baby. I am now 11 weeks pregnant. I feel that the pregnancy and ADHD symptoms are becoming unbearable. I am having a difficult time balancing my daily activities and staying on task. I'm very impulsive and it's effecting my relationship, as well. I have two children, I am working part time and I am in school full time. I'm sure that it's evident how important it is that I stick to a routine. Does anyone have any personal expereience with Adderall XR and pregnancy? Any moms that have found ways to cope without medication? Any information would be appreciated!

I was on 30mg a day and stopped taking it when I found out I was pregnant...I was about 8 weeks. My doctor wanted to ween me off of it but I just stopped. I had just started a new job with intense 12 week training 40 hours a week plus on call and it was really rough for a few weeks. I was completely exhausted and did not want to do anything. I felt so cranky and not myself at all. I explained to my new boss that I was going to be stopping my medication( I work in a hospital so they were very understanding). Everyone was very helpful and understanding in my transition and after a few weeks passed I felt 100% better. Everyday is still a struggle but I didn't not want to do anything now to put my baby any possible danger.

Bad idea to take it during pregnancy.  Do you have a therapist that could help? ADHD and anxiety often go hand in hand perhaps you could take skmethjng for the anxiety see if that helps with organizing and focus. I have both.

I'm in the same boat but with Vyvanse. I quit until 20ish or so weeks and now I take it occasionally. My ob/gyn is the prescriber so he's monitoring. He did ask me to not take it after 36 weeks, so that's my plan. I would ask your doc if you can take a lower dosage a couple times a week once you hit the second trimester. It may help you maintain some sanity. Good luck!

I stopped taking it way before pregnacy but i couldn't imagine being on it and pregnant. I didn't eat while i was on it. Talk to your doctor, get a good planner and start organizing your days. Organization helps me not get completely off task. Yes... I'm a wee bit more flaky now that I'm pregnant and ADD lol but I'd rather be flaky than take meds that can have a negative effect on the baby. But seriously, PLANNER - get one and talk to your doctor or a counselor about organization tips to help you deal with your ADHD without medicine. Check out tips on pinterest in the meantime . Good luck

Talk to your physician about other options where is evidence of no harm to baby. I had to wean off of mine over a period of time so I could adjust and doctor recommended I stay off anything unless absolutely necessary. It was tough, but I managed. Increasing my physical activity helped, along with making sure I was getting plenty of sleep

I don't have any answers, but I want you to know I'm in the same boat! I was on 10 mg IR 3x daily ..I told my psychiatrist I was trying to get pregnant, so I tapered off the ssri I was on and she told me to stop the adderall if I got pregnant. I'm really really struggling, and I know there may be days where I have to take a small dose just to get something done .... I'm going for my first appointment on Tuesday (I'm 8 weeks) so I'm going to talk to my OB then...I'm hoping it gets better in the 2nd trimester? Right now I can't get myself off the couch and feel like I'm living in a constant star of chaos 😐

Unfortunately, I don't find that it gets any better in the second trimester. However, I read that exercising does help! Now that I am not sick, I plan to see how well that works.

My doctor actual sent me to a specialist and he said it is more dangerous for you to be off of it and the baby feel WD! I powers my 60 a day to 30 and was not able to function at all, but my thought process was, the lower the dose the better, I was wrong. He said if your going to take it, take it in effective dose as it doesn't matter. Pretty much all or nothing... Hope that helps you..

You can tolerate not taking it and can life with the ADHD then obviously not taking it is the best!! Again, repeating what my doctor said. Have you spoken to them

He wasn't concerned about the Adderall nearly as much as the Prozac I am on. The withdrawals of adderral are still not definite however the SSRI messes with the chemistry and does effect the baby! If you can't function without Adderall, take it as usual or as prescribed for therapeutic dose or if
