Identical or fraternal?

How does the doctor check if the twins are identical or fraternal. I'm 9 weeks, and my ob said at this point they are not sure,but didn't follow up with anymore of an explanation.

Usually identical twins share one sac since they come from one egg that has split. Fraternal usually develop in two different sacs because two different eggs are fertilized.

We have di di girls (two placentas and two sacs) but we don't know if they are identical or fraternal. If they had been a boy and a girl, then we would have known that they were fraternal. We will do a DNA test once they are born to know either way.

They are pretty good at telling on ultrasounds with  sacs and placentas to at least see what kind of pregnancy and risk you could be looking at. We had a terrible time finding the membrane between our mono/di girls. However, some identical twins can have two placentas so in the end, many parents decide to have the blood tests done just to be certain on what type of twins they really have. I would recommend a twin pregnancy book, I read up on it like crazy and now am ready for any questions that come from family and friends. Because there will be TONS of questions! Congrats on the twins!

It depends if you are having mono di ( one placenta/two amniotic sacs) or di di (two placenta/two sacs). Mono di are always identical and di di can be either, depending on when the egg split if they are identical. Here's an early pic of my mono di identical twins. Hope this helps!

The first time I went it she said they looked fraternal because they were in separate sacs but every di di twins I've seen they were in completely different areas unlike mine who look like they're in separate sacs but share a placenta. Next time I went it they confirmed I was having mono/di twins! So in my opinion if they look like they're in completely different areas not touching at all they're di/di but if they look similar to mine they're mono/di, but even then di/di can be identical but you'll probably have to test them to see when the egg split. Sorry hope that wasn't confusing!
