How do people get promotional things for free ?

I often see in reviews “this review was collected as part of a promotion” or something along those lines. The person doing the review gets the item for free in exchange for their review. 
How do you become one of those people ? Lol

Lol I always wondered the same thing but I do know for target, you have to be chosen to be one of those people and that’s only when they’ve left so many reviews (not freebie reviews and on stuff that you did purchase from them) on that app. I’ve tried with them for a long time and definitely order too much and still haven’t been invited lol
