My autistic 4 year old has his first OT appt tomorrow after school and I have been debating if I should let him stay home tomorrow from school in preparation or send him. He has been sick with a cold the past few days. His fever broke last night and he’s staying home today. I just don’t know what to expect from this OT and I’m scared it’ll be too much on him at once and he will have a major meltdown with recovering from a cold, all day school, and then OT. Wwyd?

For this first time I would say keep him home from school, but only because he was very recently sick. If he’d been going to school this whole time I’d say do school too.

Is he a kid that relies on routines? If so then I would send him to school, as long as he is feeling better and has still been fever free. The OT should be used to meltdowns and have tricks to work through and around them. It might be a lot for him the first time but if that is when his appointments are normally going to be then he needs to get used to it, so doing it right from the beginning should help him to know what to expect each week.
