Can someone use AirPods to spy?

Can someone use air pods to listen to your conversation 50 feet away? Also if so how can you prevent this from happening.

No. They’d have to be connected to your phone. If someone’s AirPods we’re connected to your phone, you wouldn’t hear the conversation.

I think what you may be referring to is the listen live function, which will amplify sound near your iPhone￼. My understanding is that you can use your air pods and iPhone to listen live. If your phone is positioned near a sound source and you tap listen live in the control center, then you can move away from your phone with your AirPods and still hear what is going on in the area you moved away from, sort of using your air pods as a type of baby monitor, so to speak. It would need to be near the person you want to hear talking, and they would need to be talking out loud, otherwise, it would just amplify all of the voices in the room. They cannot target one person unless they placed their phone near you￼. The only way to prevent this from happening is to make sure no one else’s phone is near you when you’re talking on your phone. So, in other words, it would be suspicious if someone put their phone down near me, and then walked away with their AirPods in their ears. ￼

I think you may be misinterpreting the *awareness mode* function. Not sure what it’s called on the AirPods but my Raycon have a setting that allows in ambient and surrounding noises. It’s used for safety when going for a run or when I want to listen to them but still hear my kids. This is the only thing I can think of that you maybe you read wrong.
