Period apps and privacy
Guys, I have been on this app for 6 years and I have really enjoyed my time on here. I have had some amazing conversations with people and have learnt so much on here. I love how it feels like a safe community for women of all ages to share the changes that are going on in their bodies at different stages and to comfortably share things on here. I think it’s beautiful and a sanctuary of a sort.
But this leads me to two great worries. One being, I have always been aware of the data/info that period apps collect of their users and sell onto other bigger corporations etc, but my love of the app, love and support of women, (and I suppose a bit of stupidity) is what kept me here. I recently read an article regarding the privacy policy failures and recent amendments(cover ups imo) regarding this app and it really worries me. There are a LOT of unaware/vulnerable people on here, also underage, sharing a lot of personal information and pictures on here, and while it’s fantastic that they are receiving amazing support, I worry about where this info is being stored.
The second worry that has come to me is: after viewing a number of posts re. creepy men on this app messaging people and commenting on very personal “TMI” posts I am hugely worried about the safety of many users on this app. If a creep is going to create an account on a period app just to view pictures of unsuspecting women, and they are bold enough to do it so loudly on here, who knows what is happening quietly?
At this point there is not much I can do, other than report the weird activity I see, possibly make contact with Glow with my concerns (although, I can’t really imagine much can be done there). But what I really want to do in this post is raise awareness to other users on here about these concerns, because it just feels like such a violation to have people share such precious and important information about their bodies, families, children, so much more, for it to just be used/viewed in such a precarious way.
Not sure if this is the best place to share this, but it is a controversial topic 😂
