My tests are always darker in the afternoon holding 3-4 hours. But it's very rare you see a positive at 8dpo. I did, but everyone else told me no then 9dpo it was in fact positive.

You can do a 4hour hold instead
My fmu is crap and never gives my first vfl 
Every vfl I’ve got was smu or a 4 hour hold in the afternoon or evening
