Why do people call their little girls "mommy" or "mommas"?

And other variations of this nickname. 
I've been hearing it more and more lately. It's usually the moms that call their daughters this.
It makes me cringe a little every time I hear it, but I'm genuinely curious why people call their little girls this. Like, to me, these nicknames refer to a mother, someone with children. So why call a small child these names?

Terms of endearment. Usually in relation to the heritage or background of the family. 
Works for some but I also have a hard time with it and don’t plan on using those names in our home.

As some have said it’s usually a culture thing. & it’s a term of endearment. It’s not weird to us because it’s what you grow up hearing all the time. I’m Mexican & we use mami(mamá) & papi(papá) i use the one with the i becase it’s like for small kiddos, the other one I find is too grown up. Straight up calling my kid mom or dad is weird to me lol IMO. My husband is Puerto Rican & they say mamas & papas. I have a son so I altérnate from the two.

It's cultural. I'm Arab. I say "mama" to both of them. It's a term of endearment, usually a reflection of us. Hard to explain in words. But all Arabs do it lol. My dad (whom I call baba) calls me baba sometimes.

It’s all I’ve ever known… my mother never did… but I first got introduced to the aboriginal community here in Australia and had seen they all did it and then went to the middle eastern and island communities and they all did it too. So I call all my kids even my son mumma. It’s not calling them mumma…. It’s kind of like…. Calling us mumma… but to our kids? I’ve never put thought into it. I feel it’s only white cultured people who don’t do it

Cringe lol that’s funny. It’s very cultural for some  people like middle eastern culture . Whatever we are to that child we call them that. For example momma u call them momma . Baba (dad) u call them baba. Khalo (uncle) u call them Khalo. Not all the time but if they are asking u for something and u respond yes Khalo to them . There are manyyyyyyyyyyy cultures I. The world and many many other societal norms 😂 america has very weird norms to other cultures 😁

Here in south america super common to call your baby girl mamita, just like I call my baby boy papito hermoso. Its a spanish thing.
