Context- my boyfriend and I have been together for 8 years. We are 24. We both still live at home with our own parents, although I am at my boyfriend’s house most nights.

I recently started my first “real” job after college. I am trying to pay off a couple thousand dollars of discover credit card debt that I accumulated. My parents don’t ask me to pay rent but they do have me buy laundry detergent, paper towels, toilet paper etc. for the family. I pay for my own food, insurance etc. After I pay off my discover card my plan is to start putting all the money I have in savings so I can get a house.

My boyfriend currently doesn’t have a job. I pay for EVERYTHING- his food and my food, all of his expenses, drive him everywhere he needs to go etc.

A couple months ago his parents gave him a card that has $148 a week go onto it so that he could use it to buy his groceries (pop, toilet paper, paper towels etc)

Today, his mom said that they are going to have to take that card back because they can’t afford to give him the money anymore, and his mom wants me to start paying for his essentials at the grocery store. She also wants me to start paying for some of her and his dad’s food as well (that my boyfriend and i won’t eat because we pay for our own food). I told his mom that she can have the card that has the $148 that goes on it every week, but that I can’t afford to buy his groceries and pay for part of theirs too. I’m paying $500 every two weeks just to pay my credit card off that my boyfriend also took part in accumulating money on as well. I’m trying to have it paid off by January.

I told her that I could pay for the things that I also consume, like the toilet paper and Diet Pepsi, but that I can’t afford to buy EVERYTHING plus not have that card. It really feels like she’s trying to use me. They also spend their money on unnecessary things like cigarettes and weed, whereas I’m trying to pay off debts and get my life on the right track.

Would you do what she is asking? Also the only reason I am at their house so often is because my boyfriend begs me to be there all the time because he’s going through a depression and wants my company.
