Baby is anemic at 9 months

I just learned my 9 month old is anemic. His hemoglobin is 9.7. I'm going to start him on iron supplements but I have read that anemia in infancy (even when iron is supplemented) can have some irreversible implications, especially with cognitive development. Any moms out there with encouraging stories regarding their older kids who once were anemic as infants?
