Would you chose to live close to work but pay $700-$1000 more per month in RENT for a small 3bd house/townhome (and be financially strained), OR live an hour away from work (stressful commute) in a larger 4bd house and be comfortable with the payment ? ( in our home we have 3 adults (my MIL lives with us), 2 toddlers, a newborn and two dogs).

We have lived at our current house 8 years and have to suddenly move unexpectedly and unfortunately all the properties near our current house are out of our budget with how prices have soared the last two years and my husbands work is in an expensive area too. There is a nice and affordable city about an hour away from work but the commute would be long for him. So we’re trying to decide if what the best option is. We also want to save to buy in a few years, and unfortunately living close to his work wouldn’t leave us with savings 😞 What would you do?

I’ll add, he drives an all electric car so gas isn’t a factor. He would be able to work remotely ever so often but not in a regular basis.

I’ll also add, we live 45 minutes away from his work now as it is and he has been doing this commute for 5 years already… He says the commute doesn’t bother him somehow, but 1+ hours one way seems like a lot to me 😞
