Canadian problem: neighbour snow blows our driveway voluntarily even though we've asked him to stop. He still asks for money.
Our neighbour is really nice, but I'm pretty sure he's got some cognitive impairment or learning disability based on the way he speaks, his mannerisms, and the way he types messages. My husband and I live in a town that gets a fair amount of snow, and at least a few times a month you're happy to have a snowblower in winter.
Our neighbour did our driveway a few times last year and each time, he asked for $10. We didn't ask him to do it, but we thanked him all the same. We said we had our own snow blower, so he didn't have to do it. When he continued to do our driveway, we asked him to please stop. Because it was $10 here and there, it wasn't a huge deal.
This year, he did our driveway with the first snow. I was home alone with my baby and my husband was at work. Sure enough, our neighbour cleared our driveway and knocked on our door. I didn't answer. He messaged us and asked for $25. We thanked him and reluctantly agreed to pay him. We reminded him again that we have a snowblower and we asked him to stop. He cleared our driveway a second time a couple days later so we said thank you but going forward, if he did our driveway again we wouldn't be paying him because we don't want him to do it. Plus, with a new baby, we can't afford to pay to have our driveway cleared each time it snows. We've repeated that many times now and we haven't paid him since the first snow.
For a month now he has reminded us that we owe him $250 and we've been responding with screenshots of our messages asking him to stop and saying we wouldn't be paying him since we didn't want him to do our driveway. The last time he asked for $50 going forward and we, once again, told him thank you but we can't afford it plus we have a snowblower so stop doing our driveway.
I'm conflicted about this. On the one hand, I feel awful not giving him money for our driveway because he did the work, but on the other, we can't afford to be paying for snow clearing.
What should we do?
UPDATE: He called the police on us today but it all worked out. We proved that he is providing a service we don't want, and we told him to stop and that we wouldn't be paying anymore if he continued. No charges laid on us, obviously. He got a warning from the police though.
