Toddler bed.. when?

Question

When did you ladies transition to a toddler bed?
My son is almost 2.5 and im thinking its time soon.
But.. the toddler beds look so high still, even with railings? My son moves alot in bed.. wouldnt he fall off?
I was thinking maybe something like this since its closer to the ground?

Im mostly just afraid of him falling!
Also, do you need a new mattress or does the crib mattress usually fit?

My son will be 3 in a month, and I’m keeping him in his crib as long as it’s safe (he isn’t trying to climb out). A lot of people think I’m dumb (he’s also still rear facing and people don’t like that either 🤷🏼‍♀️), but I don’t know why people would want to rush that milestone…it doesn’t sound cute to me to have him be able to come find me in the night before I have to 🤪.

We went from crib to a twin floor bed for my daughter around 20 months, once she got used to the amount of space she had on that after 2.5-3 months we then got her a twin daybed with a trundle that we kept halfway pulled out so if she did roll out she would roll onto that one. She’s over 3 now and has only ever rolled out once.

My son is three and has a twin bed. We started the toddler bed with rails when he was around 2 and then jumped to twin. I keep his toddler bed mattress in the floor beside his twin just incase he rolls off but it’s a low to the ground twin and he hasn’t rolled off yet and it’s been a few months. We also have baby gate on his bedroom door and a baby monitor so when he wakes up I hear him and go to his room

My sons crib was a convertible so it turned into a toddler bed and then into a full. We transitioned it to the toddler bed a month before he turned two and just made sure to get him a step stool so he could get in and out in his own

Since we needed the crib for baby #2, my 1st kid moved out of the crib at 18 months old. I switched her to a twin-sized floor bed. She can and has rolled off of the bed numerous times, but it's only 8 inches off the ground (5in tall mattress, 3 in tall bed frame) and she falls onto carpet so she's never gotten injured. She also loves the fact that she can climb into and out of the bed on her own. Highly recommend.

I think there's a pretty wide range of age that parents switch to toddler bed. Some skip it and go straight to big kid bed since a toddler bed is the same size as a crib and then they don't have to purchase yet another bed when the toddler gets too big. I personally converted my kids convertible crib to the toddler bed when she was 18 months old but if the crib didn't convert I would have waited until she was big enough and just go straight to a twin size floor bed until she was old enough to not roll around then get a raised bedframe. Lots of parents now prefer the floor beds and it reduces any anxiety about your kid falling out of bed.

I never did a toddler bed. It just uses a crib mattress. If theyve outgrown their crib, theyve outgrown their toddler bed. And at least with us, once we transitioned out of the crib, naptime stopped. So we went from crib to twin bed around age 3.5. You can get bed rails for a twin/double bed if youre worried about them rolling out, we had one from Regalo.
