I was under the impression that it is a very popular name, but I saw it was listed as 179th in popularity on the social security website for 2021 which was surprising to me.

I agree it has to be popular. What I did to gauge name popularity is to see where my name ranked the year I was born and see how popular it was. 
I think I was like 600+ for my year. I have met dozens of people with my name and was friend or had classmates with my name probably at or around 10 people that I can think of. I am not including name spelling variations. 
When I named my daughter her name ranked around 600+ we have met 2 people so far with her name… she is 4. 
My son on the other hand his name ranked like 2000 but… his name could be spelled so many ways so we are constantly meeting boys with his name. I hate it. 
Go with what you like though. It’s a cute name.

I’ve only met one girl in my life named Sage.. and I was probably 9 or 10 at the time lol. I’ve met one male named Sage too while I was in high school. I wouldn’t say it’s super popular , however it’s not an uncommon name.
