Behind on well visits

Good morning,

I had baby #2 at the beginning of November. He went to his first newborn well visit on time along with a few weight checks. They didn't have any openings for his one month visit in December so it was scheduled for today. They said being behind wasn't an issue.

Well nurse called this morning rescheduling until the end of the month because the doctor couldn't come in today and they didn't have another opening until the 24th. I understand things happen but is it okay to be this far behind? I want to know how his weight is, discuss his torticolis and oral ties. They can't get us in at all for anything until the 24th. I'm wondering if I should switch doctors altogether or if I'm overreacting and things should be fine. We love the doctor and have a good relationship with her but the health of my kids is more important than that

I would talk candidly with the doctor about scheduling issues and explain the obvious need of keeping the schedule on time. If they can’t provide you with the appointments you need, I’d switch immediately to keep my baby on track.

Well child visits are optional. My son was seen at a week old and hasn't been back and he's 4 months old. But that's because we're having a very hard time getting his social security card and the paperwork we need for his social security card. We will take him when we can but we don't know when that will be and he's gonna be behind on his vaccines

Well child visits are not supposed to be optional. An acquaintance of mine almost got CPS called because she missed/rescheduled 3 in a row.

With staffing issues around the country and it being January in the midst of this crazy sick season, I doubt you’d find a sooner appointment. If you have specific things you’d like to discuss you’ll probably have to schedule a sick visit. My first was a month behind on her well visits during her first year and that was without all this current crazy stuff. She caught up between the 12 and 15 month visits as I recall.

Unfortunately this is how a lot of healthcare services are right now. Staffing is at an all time low and sickness is at a high. if you try to switch providers, you may also be experiencing long wait times. Where I am it’s normal to wait 3+ months for a new patient appt. I had to schedule a GI appointment in October and they couldn’t get me in until July. I called other places and they weren’t much better. I ended up getting in on a cancellation about 2 weeks after I scheduled. I’d go a head and schedule with your current doctor and try to follow up with them about cancellations every couple of days. maybe call for a new patient appointment with another pediatrician and see how soon they can get you in.
