Is back labour constant?

If you have back labour, is the pain constant or does it come and go like contractions? How can you tell if it's the start of labour or just bad back ache?

I had back labor with our son. It was agony. I was in labor for 2 days and it felt like someone was slowly crushing my spine over and over. Mines was constant but it makes sense when he was born. The dr said he was born "sunny side up" which made my back feel the way it did. I had to have a vacuum assisted delivery.

I had some back labor with my daughter. It started as waves like normal contractions and then became constant pain in my back and my stomach. It’s what made me cave and get the epidural
