Today I went to make an appointment for birth control, the lady told me not to have intercourse until my appointment, why is that? She didn't really explain.

In case you get pregnant, they can't prescribe you birth control if there is a chance of pregnancy

To prevent pregnancy I assume. Otherwise you shouldn't start birth control until right after your period so that you aren't pregnant
