How do I teach my baby to eat on his own?

My son will be 16 months this month and he doesn’t eat on his own. If I put the plate of food in front of him he will just try to okay with it. Are there any tips you ladies have ? I’m a ftm so I’ve never done this before.

Don’t spoon feed them. 
Offer utensils but don’t force them to use them. 
If you’ve been spoon feeding this whole time, it’s going to take some time for baby to learn. 
Offer easy to hold foods. Whole green beans, ribs, chicken drumsticks, corn if the cob, strips of toast…etc. 
Model how to eat by eating the same foods at the same time.

Babies learn by playing with food and utensils. It's best to let them make some messes, play with their spoons, eat with theirs hands and learn new textures as they please. I give my daughter messy foods right before a bath so yogurt in her hair won't bug me so much 😅 they need to follow their own timing when they are able.

My youngest son ate with his hands until 3 months ago and he’s 2 and a half.

It’s normal for them to play with it, when you child has it in there hand you can help guide the food to there mouth.
