How u check with the cervix feel and know it's low and ferm? Help someone please

Are you meant to hope its high and soft or low and firm? I would have thought high and firm so that confuses me...

Normally using a clean finger insert it into your self, feeling for sort of a round lump poking down with a slight opening to it I find it difficult to tell the difference between hard and soft but definitely easier to tell if it's low or high! Good luck x
