Asking to test for HIV..

Just recently I was in class and we went over HIV and how it can spread and I've never given it much thought until now. My husband has had 6 partners before me and who knows how many people those girls have slept with. Is it stupid to get tested or ask him to? He acted kind of offended and brushed off the question so I dropped it. Should I have asked him that? Would it be dumb to take one this late?
