Does brown discharge count as the first day of my period?

I was just wondering if anyone else gets a brown discharge 2or 3 days before period starts? Now that I'm TTC, I don't know if I should count this as the first day of my period or when I actually start bleeding? Thanks.

I usually get the same thing but have been told that you count day one from when you actually start to bleed the brown discharge is really just spotting ?
