how can I tell if I'm ovulating!?

I haven't taken ovulation tests in a few months because we sort of have given up on a baby since my periods have been so irregular. I had a normal period this time around & am currently on day 23 of my cycle, I've had really bad cramps today so I decided to take an ovulation test which was a good clear positive in my opinion but on day 23!? is my irregular periods causing irregular ovulation? I am worried I have PCOS now because I read it can cause you to always have a false positive... but I have had negative tests in the past as well? not always positive. ​
