What do you think about getting your partner a gift (ring or other) for engagement?

Been chatting to my partner about marriage, somehow we got onto the conversation of an 'engagement watch'. I thought yeah, why not?! There's something about a man 'putting a ring on it' that makes me think it's like claiming somehow, so we joked that we can 'claim' each other. Ha!
