I would say it matters and you should lose to someone you love and are ready to be with. Personally wouldn't consider their previous partners but that could change on religious views

I chose to lose it to someone who was a few years older to me and had enough experience to know how to make sure I was comfortable, he was very gentle and checked in with me the whole time.
