Pay midwife in advance?

I'm a second time mom, but I'm interested in going with a midwife this time. I met with a midwife for a consult. Something that came up is that I have to pay for labor and delivery in advance in installments until I give birth. This just seems odd since I didn't pay a dime to my OB until after birth. Does anyone have any insight/experience with this?

I have to do the same thing. They can't bill the insurance until the end so it is a safety net in case insurance screws them over. Then I will get money back from insurance directly

I know that my friend paid for her midwife upfront, she wasn't concerned though because she got appointments at her house (she had a home water birth) she loved the personal bond she grew with her midwife. even now, after her baby is born and is 8 months she can call her midwife with questions.

I'm a homebirth midwife and I require 2/3 of my fee due by 37 weeks gestation and the last 1/3 due by 6 weeks postpartum.

Most midwives and birthing centers not connected to a hospital do this. It's because they have such hassle getting money from insurance. You can pursue it further and longer than they can. We decided to go with a midwifery team at our hospital. Ended up paying $300 instead of the $6500 we were quoted from the birthing center.

That's how it is with mine. And every midwife I interviewed. It seems normal. And my OB from my last baby required it to be paid before birth. So I guess it jus depends. But it seems normal to me. Ask he about what amount is refundable if you have to transfer care.

i'm paying my midwife out of pocket and i have to be completely paid by 36 weeks! when i had insurance with baby1 i just paid co-pays at appointments but didn't pay my birth co-pay and other expenses until after the baby was born.

This is pretty standard. I never mown a midwife not to approach it this way. And the OB/GYN oiffice I go to for general check-ups, paps, etc. requires advance payment for their deliveries.

Thats how most midwives work. Theres no guarantee that they'll get their money after you deliver so I'm sure its a precaution for them
