I feel this is the case for the most part, but there are definitely degrees of obligation for all relationships outside of marriage. When you consent to be in a relationship with someone, officially or understood, you are obligated by human decency to be trustworthy, to communicate, and to not cheat.

IMO, anyone who doesn't officially commit, whether civil or religious,  is just passing through my life. We don't owe each other anything except agreed upon decency and companionship.

I feel you are obligated to someone the min you are in a commitment with them be it marriage or just a relationship.

What I've been told is that you're not morally obligated to tell your boyfriend anything if he asks you something. You don't know if the guy is going to be the one you marry later on. Just choose wisely what you say if he asks you something. It's the same if a girlfriend asks the boyfriend something.
