Exercise Question!

I've recently started running again about a mile or 2 a day, and I woke up this morning and my shins are so stiff and sharp shooting pains, I know I got shin splints from cheerleading but how can I avoid/alleviate this pain? I'm a pretty active girl and I'm young (20) so I shouldn't be having this much trouble should I?
