Who's last name does the baby get?

We both have generic/normal last names. I, the mother, am the last person with my family name so it means a lot that it gets passed on. He is the father so he wants it to be his name. But we are not married and will not get married.

My parents were not married and she gave me his last name (intentions of marriage) I say if you two have no intentions of marriage there is no need to give him the name it may sounds bitchy of me but I remember growing up and always wishing I had the same name as my mom

I think if you have a boy you could give him your last name only. That way it will carry on.

I went to school with two sisters who had a hyphenated last name. When their parents got married, mom kept her maiden name. So when they had the girls they hyphenated, Camp-Harris. Moms-dads. I believe it had to do with the end of the moms maiden name in her family as well.

My first son has his dad's last name which is Hyphenated but my second son will only have mine. I'm the last living in my family so with my son my family name will go on.
