They swab your cervix, and look for any abnormal cells. These cells could range from normal flora to potentially cancerous cells. The new regulations say that women over the age of 23 need a pap every 3 years whether they are sexually active or not. Like I said in an earlier post, routine pap smears do not necessarily test for stds. It's important to regularly get screened for stds whenever you have a new sexual partner.
