Will you be taking the Tdap vaccine for protection against whooping cough in your third trimester

Yesterday at our birthing classes, the instructor mentioned that all mums to be should take the vaccine between 28 and 36 weeks. My doctor hasn't mentioned this. I have just done some research and it is in fact recommended as it gives the baby immunity until s/he can start vaccines at 2 months.

You mentioned the exact reason to get it- baby can't get vaccinated right away. Pertussis is potentially devastating to a newborn. I work in a Peds hospital so I'm vaccinated already but will get another just for baby and to ensure mine is active.

I got mine with my first child! They actually gave it to me in the hospital after I had the baby. I did read that you should get it again before another new born.. I'm 30 weeks with my second but I'm not sure if I will have to get it. Oh and my husband got it too before our first! Can't take that risk! That's why I make my whole family get the flu shot. The newborn will be here in January when it's peak season for the flu!

With my first child I got the tdap vac right after I had her, never was mentioned during pregnancy, I'll be getting it at my next appoinment along with my flu shot. :)

Pertussis is serious for babirs, it can kill them. It is on the rise and has been for the last decade. The county where I live in Northern California has it's highest rate of diagnosed pertussis cases since the 1980's.
