Talking on the phone.

I've been dating my boyfriend for over a year. Yet, we rarely talk on the phone. When we try to, we never know what to say, well more like, he doesn't know what to say. I can talk forever, but he barely replies. So then I feel as if he doesn't care. Then I consistently tell him how I think he should try and come up with stuff to talk about and all he ever says is, "uh well, uh idk, idk what to talk about" I tell him to just think of something he did and tell me about it. He can't even do that. We are fine in person, but on phone, I get so mad because this is all he does. What should I do? I'm so annoyed with this whole thing. I just want to talk to him on the damn phone, not constantly talking about how we can't come up with things to say.
