Reaction to "I love you"

I've been dating this wonderful man for almost a year now. He's kind and he makes me happy. He's a bit older. I told him I love him because I genuinely do and I felt it was the right time to say it. His reaction was "stop it, stop, don't say it..." He continued to kiss me and be affectionate. I'm not sure how to feel abou it.
