Skipping a period on purpose

I just started a new brand of birth control, othro tri-cyclen, and it is the first time I've been on a pill with different hormones each week. In the past (when I was on a continuous dose pack), I've been able to purposefully skip periods by starting a new pack instead of taking the placebo/iron pills. However, I'm not sure if this is possible with a hormone changing pill. Anyone know? I would normally ask my doctor a question like this, but he's on vacation this week!
