Is it normal to be scared to insert a tampon?

I have never inserted anything inside my vagina. Not anything, except for last night. I inserted a tampon and it hurt so much. I took it out and it hurt so bad that I cried. Now, I refuse to put in a tampon even though I need it because with just a pad, I leak. It is very embarrassing in school. I am 14 years old and I am scared to insert anything in my vagina. Is this normal? And this is only the second time that I've had my period. I am scared to insert a tampon in my vagina, but I need to so I don't leak. Am I putting it in right? Am I just being silly? Why am I so scared? Any answers would help greatly. (I have a heavy flow that lasts 8 days with no breaks.)

When I first got my period, I had the same issue. Turns out, I was just doing it wrong. Try to insert it while sitting or squatting and at a slight inward angle. You'll get the hang of it.

In my opinion ill say its totally normal, trust me I was in the same position as you but no worries is normal and eventually youll get used to it :)

I never used pads, I've used tampons from the jump. It felt uncomfortable at first and I remember thinking "I hope it doesn't always feel like this" but I got used to them in a matter of days! Now they don't phase me at all

I had the same problem when I tried switching to tampons. I tried having my mom help me, I tried using a mirror, I asked friends about it, and I didn't start using tampons until I had had my period for 5 years. The first few times were a little painful, but after a while it stopped hurting. Maybe try using them when your flow is the heaviest because when your vagina is dry, it hurts so bad. The tampax pearle have definitely gone in the easiest for me. I to this day cannot get a cardboard applicator in there.

I should add that the first time I used one I freaked out and took it out right away so it was grippy cause it was dry so I should have waited a bit before taking it out. When it's used it will slide out easier. And it took me a while to try them again but when I did it got easier in no time.

Tampons are something that does take practice and you may find certain kinds you prefer.  I think the platex pearl kind has the best applicator.  It doesn't seem to grip as bad going in.  and if tampons are not for you I think the always infinity pad is the best.  Not bulky and works great.

Also I wear a light liner even if I am using a tampon as the tampons can still leak. If you do get used to tampons I strongly recommend looking into a diva cup (brand of menstral cup) they work great! Less leaks, can leave them in up to 12 hours (depending on flow) I have just started using one and it's life changing lol but I'd say tampons is the first step... good luck

Hi! So! Seeing that this is your first period I want to say it's completely normal! Do you have and close friends/mom/sisters that can help? I know this sounds weird but my friends and I would help eachother out basically until we got the hang out of it :) 
What I do is when I'm sitting on the toilet i have my dominat hand in the front holding it. then my other just kinda keeping it in place. My dominate hand is the one that usually inserts it in. 
Also, leaning a tad bit to the left may help it go in easier.
Are you completely wet down there (from discharge or blood?) are you using plastic or cardboard tampons? 
Plastic hurts WAY less. I CANNOT use cardboard. 
My favs are playtex (how ever you spell it) sport. :)
