Does icsi have to be done with ivf....?? I'm confused!!

Ok so we got told due to hubby's low sperm count that icsi is our only option. My Gyno told me that ivf costs £12,000 where as icsi is £4,000 so it's a lot cheaper. Someone has just said u have to have icsi with ivf so that means it will be £16,000 all together!!!!!!! Is that right??? I was feeling hopeful that £4,000 isn't a lot to save up for rather than £12,000 but now I'm feeling pretty shitty about it       :-((

Perhaps the dr meant IUI versus IVF. IUI would cost much less than IVF.

Yes, ICSI can be part of the IVF process, if needed.  It's not something that can be done without the rest of the IVF process.

No it doesn't have to be done unless recommended by te re due to other conditions where they feel the egg & sprem will not fertilize on their own

Hi Tara, As you might already know that to form an embryo , in IVF, they put the sperm and egg together in a Petri dish, hoping that the sperm would infuse itself in the egg naturally, and hence form an embryo. Sometimes when the sperm is unable to do this by itself, someone has to inject the sperm inside the egg in the Petri dish. This is called ICSI.
